"offense-defense" theory
A politico-military theory developed by the political scientist Robert Jervis in 1978 which holds that the risk of war increases as a nation's offensive force grows stronger and conquest of an enemy grows easier. At the same time, nations favoring the status quo grow more aggressive as they seek more defensible borders.
