The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion develops and coordinates national programs aimed at improving the health of Americans. Projects include Steps to a HealthierUS (programs to prevent asthma, cancer, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and stroke), Dietary Guidelines for Americans (published every 5 years with the Department of Agriculture), the National Health Information Center (online database with contact info for more than 1,700 help groups), and healthfinder (Web site with links to more than 6,000 federal and private health resources). It also publishes dozens of booklets, brochures, and guide books on health topics. Congress created the office in 1976.
