Term used in the United States for any financial organization with a headquarters outside the country. A Mutual Fund with a legal domicile in the Bahamas or the Cayman Islands, for instance, is called an offshore fund. To be sold in the United States, such funds must adhere to all pertinent federal and state regulations. Many banks have offshore subsidiaries that engage in activities that are either heavily regulated or taxed or not allowed under U.S. Law.
