City (pop., 2005 est.: 941,000), southwestern Nigeria. Founded in the mid-17th century, it was an outpost of the Oyo empire until the Muslim Fulani conquests in the early 19th century. As a centre of resistance, the walled town attracted many Oyo refugees. It is located northeast of Ibadan and is now one of Nigeria's largest urban centres. It is also a trading centre and rail junction.

Ogbomosho (ōbū'môshô, ŏgbōmō'shō), city (1991 pop. 644,000), SW Nigeria. It is the trade center for a farming region. Yams, cassava, corn, and tobacco are grown. Cotton is grown and used to weave cloth. Ogbomosho was founded in the 17th cent. It resisted Fulani invasions in the early 19th cent. and grew by absorbing refugees from towns destroyed by the Fulani. A teachers college is in the city.

Ogbomosho (also Ogbomoṣo) is a city in Oyo State, southwestern Nigeria, that was founded in the mid 1600s.[1] The population was approximately 645,000 as of 1991;[2] as of March 2005, it is estimated to be around 1,200,000.[3]

The majority of the people are members of the Yoruba ethnic group. Yams, cassava, maize, and tobacco are some of the notable agricultural products of the region.[2]
