Based on a popular Chilean comic book series by Themos Lobos, director Alejandro Rojas makes Chilean cinematic history with the first animated film from the South American country with his 2002 fantasy Ogu y Mampato en Rapa Nui. Young Mampato takes an interest in the culture of Rapa Nui (otherwise known as Easter Island) after his father returns from a trip with some small relics from the mysterious island located some 2,300 miles off the coast of Chile. While perusing the Internet to learn more about the island's culture, Mampato finds himself sucked into a time warp that lands him in the middle of ancient Rapa Nui. Befriending a caveman named Ogu, the lad finds himself embroiled in a struggle to free the oppressed population of the island from a tyrannical ruler while learning firsthand about the culture and history of the largely Polynesian-populated island. ~ Ryan Shriver, Rovi
