History
In 1949, Oikos was founded together with the Nordic Society Oikos by a group of Danish, Norwegian, Swedish,Finnish and Icelandic ecologists. The purpose was to facilitate communication among scientists in the Nordic countries, which had been isolated from each other during the Second World War and to provide a vehicle for publishing in the growing field of ecology. The journal content should be unbiased with regard to taxonomic group. Later, during the 1970'es, the scope was narrowed to studies with relevance to the progress of theory in ecology. Simultaneously, the geographical spread of the authorship was widened. The sister journal Ecography was also established as an outlet for studies with a distinct spatial component.
From 1949 to 1977, the journal appeared with one volume partitioned into three issues per year. From 1977 to 1987, two volumes came out per year, and from 1987 three volumes. As a consequence of this expansion a permanent editorial office was set up at Lund University.
1949-1975 a number of Oikos Supplement volumes were published at irregular intervals.
