(b Helsinki, 7 March 1946). Finnish conductor. His early career was as a violinist in Helsinki; he had conducting experience with the Finnish National Opera when he won the Karajan Competition of 1969, which led to engagements in Europe and the USA which brought him a reputation for spontaneity tempered by sensitivity and disciplined feeling. He held posts with the Finnish Radio SO (1971), the Oslo PO (1975), the Helsinki PO (1979), the Dutch Radio SO (1983), as guest conductor of the CBSO (1985) and the Sjaelland SO, Copenhagen (1988).
