A wonderfully muscular collection from fiddler Joe MacLean, who combines his raw-toned (and sometimes raw-boned) string work with boxy, simple piano support from Lila Hashem and rhythm support from Peter Dominic, the latter making interesting use of a small drumkit to fit in with the Celtic origins of the music performed by MacLean. This album has its own particular tale of fortune, having been recorded in 1977, but rejected at the time by the notoriously shy MacLean for unspecified reasons. When Rounder was finally able to arrange for its release, an additional cut featuring MacLean and pianist Marie MacLellan, recorded in 1961, was added. Students of traditional Scottish music will find a great deal to enjoy here - aside from his wonderful fiddle playing, MacLean was a notable student of Scots music, making considerable efforts to acquire old manuscripts and numerous sources of music. ~ Steven E.
