1867 | Oliver Optic's Magazine for Boys and Girls. Founded by Boston schoolteacher and writer William Taylor Adams (1822-1897), who, writing as "Oliver Optic," becomes the chief rival of Horatio Alger Jr. in producing juvenile reading matter. Adams wrote nearly a thousand adventure stories; the best of them, "Outward Bound; or, Young America Afloat," appears in the magazine in 1867. His many novels, grouped in series, include the Boat Club series (1854), Woodville series (1861-1867), Army and Navy series (1865-1894), Starry Flag series (1867-1869), Yacht Club series (1872-1900), and Great Western series (1875-1882). |
