OmniFocus is a personal task manager by The Omni Group for Mac OS X and iPhone OS. The goal of the program is to be able to capture various thoughts and ideas into to do lists.
The program uses concepts and techniques described in the book Getting Things Done (commonly abbreviated as GTD) by David Allen.

History
Omnifocus has its roots in the Kinkless kGTD add/scripts for the Omnigroups OmniOutliner product.[1] Kinkless (kGTD) was developed by developed by Ethan J. A. Schoonover to enable those following the GTD methodology. The Omni group subsequently brought Ethan along with Merlin Mann to form a project team to create a bespoke GTD application; Omnifocus.[2]
Main Features
- Task/Action Capture
- Keyboard Entry
- Email triggers - specially formatted email is processed by email rules in Apple Mail program to capture a new Task. Emails are typically formatted similarly to this:
task > proj @ context $ estimatedTimeToCompletion // notes # start date # end date
-
- Quick Entry window is a task capture head up display - a hot key brings up an input box (regardless of the foreground application in use)
- Cut and Paste 'Clipping' service
- Projects can be linear, parallel or a project can be made into a 'Single Action' list
- Smart Match technology provides shortcut input your text labels or contexts
- Project review mode
- Synchronization between Macs and iPod Touch/iPhone. This facility can use MobileMe, Bonjour (ZeroConf networking), Disk based or hosted WebDAV technology to achieve the sync.
Additional Features
- Comprehensive date entry facilities (yesterday, 1w (1 week ahead), next week, 4d (4 days ahead)
- View bar/Perspectives - enable you to focus on what actions should currently have your attention.
- Action groups - allows tasks to be grouped within a project - enables 'sub-projects'
- Folders (multiple layers) - allows easier grouping of projects
- Hierarchies of contexts and sub-contexts are permitted; i.e. contexts within contexts.
- Repeating actions and projects
- Flagging of projects and actions (the 'flag' can have an arbitrary meaning to the end-user)
Typical Desktop Workflow
- Create projects
- Add Actions (Tasks)
- Create and assign Contexts
- Review Action status
- Filter by View bar (Perspectives)
- Add actions to inbox
- Review projects
- Synchronize with iCal
iPod Touch/iPhone version
The iPod Touch/iPhone version is necessarily not as feature complete as the desktop version, and stands at version 1.1.4 compared to the desktop version 1.5. Synchronization between the two versions is reported to be both reliable and predictable. It is possible to successfully use the iPod Touch/iPhone version as a standalone GTD tool, with no need to purchase the desktop version. Ken Case, chairman and CEO of OmniGroup has been quoted as saying that the "iPhone version of OmniFocus was not to be merely a companion to the desktop version".[3]
