Plot

Christmas Eve is just like any other work day for pickpocket Trish Tracy (Mary Stuart Masterson) and her niece Patsy (Lauren Suzanne Pratt). With a store full of suckers ripe for plucking, Trish and Patsy work the crowd, amassing quite a fortune before they're caught by sharp-eyed (and soft-hearted) security guard Bert (Mark Ruffalo). Rather than have Trish spend the Holidays in jail and turning over Patsy to Social Services, Bert agrees to be temporarily responsible for the pair--and that's how Trish and Patsy end up passing the Yuletide days in Bert's tiny apartment. For the most part, this made-for-cable movie emulates such previous Christmas-themed films as 1940's Remember the Night?, though towards the end of the story the writers throw a curve at the audience by introducing an unsavory character who plans to kidnap perky Patsy. On the 2nd Day of Christmas debuted December 8, 1997, on the Lifetime channel. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

On the 2nd Day of Christmas is a Lifetime television movie starring Mary Stuart Masterson and Mark Ruffalo, directed by James Frawley.

Plot

Small-time thieves Trish (Mary Stuart Masterson) and her niece Patsy (Lauren Pratt) are at a diner, planning their next heist. Patsy tells her Aunt Trish that it's wrong that they are pick-pocketing people but Trish believes it's OK in some way.

Trish's old beau Mel (David Hewlett) comes to the diner to talk to Trish, being chased by two guys to whom he owes money. Trish and Patsy leave to go to Limberburg Mall. Patsy puts on a blond wig and begins to pick-pocket Mr. Limber (Lawrence Dane), the owner of the mall. They are caught by the mall security guard Bert (Mark Ruffalo).

Trish and Patsy are brought to the office of Limber, arrested and sentenced. After Christmas, on December 26, Patsy is to be given to a family who can look out for her interests better and Trish is to serve time. Bert is to keep a watch over them until then.

As the days go by, Trish and Bert begin to develop an attraction for each other. After Christmas is ruined for Trish and Patsy, Bert takes them to Maplewood where Patsy confesses all her bad deeds to Santa's head elf and writes Santa a letter.

On December 26th, Patsy is kidnapped by Mel. He is caught by Bert and everyone ends up back in the office were Social Services officials await them. But with Patsy's wish coming true, they get a second chance. Mel is hauled off to jail. Bert quits his job and proposes to Trish.
