Idioms: one by one

Also, one at a time. Individually in succession, as in The ducklings jumped into the pond one by one, or One at a time they went into the office. Formerly also put as one and one and one after one, this idiom dates from about a.d. 1000.

Review

One by One is the most accomplished album Foo Fighters have made, which isn't necessarily the same as the best. Picking up the clean, focused sound and attitude of There Is Nothing Left to Lose, One by One is gleaming hard rock: it may have a shiny production, but hits hard in its rhythm and its impeccably distorted guitars. Dave Grohl's songs often express (or at least suggest) tortured emotions in their lyrics, but the album doesn't hit at a gut-level; it's too polished for that. It's not a bad thing, since the band is damn good and the production is more focused than any of the Foos' previous albums. The problem is, Grohl's songwriting has slipped slightly. It's still sturdy and melodic, yet not as immediate or memorable. Nothing is as majestic as "Learn to Fly," haunting as "Everlong," gut-crunching as "Monkey Wrench," or even as boneheadedly irresistible as their contribution to the Orange County soundtrack, "The One". Instead, it all fits together and sounds good as a piece, without offering individual moments to savor. Not the worst tradeoff, of course, but it's hard not to wish that the songs stuck in your head the way they used to, even if the album is still enjoyable as a whole. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

One By One is the fourth studio album by the Foo Fighters, released October 22 2002. The album is the first to feature guitarist Chris Shiflett.

There are two versions of this album released, one with a white cover (CD only) and another with a black cover (CD and limited edition DVD). The Limited Edition bonus DVD includes audio and video versions (Stereo and 5.1 Mixes) of the tracks "All My Life" and "Walking A Line", audio-only versions (Stereo and 5.1 Mixes) of "The One" and other special features.

One by One won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 2004. The album gave the Foo Fighters their first UK #1 album and also gave them a #3 peak in the U.S. As of June 2005, One By One has sold 1.2 million units in the United States. However, lead singer Dave Grohl has stated that it is his least favorite album: "I was kinda pissed at myself for the last record," says Dave Grohl about the Foo Fighters' 2002 release One by One, adding "four of the songs were good, and the other seven I never played again in my life. We rushed into it, and we rushed out of it." This album was the second Foo Fighters album to have a song reach the top of the Modern Rock Tracks chart, with "All My Life." It continued the pattern of every Foo Fighters album to have more weeks at the top of the chart than the one before it. (There Is Nothing Left to Lose - 1 week, One By One - 10 weeks, In Your Honor - 13 weeks, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace - 29 weeks). The title One By One was taken from first single "All My Life."
