One Crazy Summer is a 1986 comedy movie starring John Cusack, Demi Moore, Bobcat Goldthwait, Curtis Armstrong and Joel Murray. The movie was written and directed by Savage Steve Holland. The original music score was composed by Cory Lerios. The film's tagline is: "They're out of school, out on Nantucket, and out of their minds. With this crowd, anything can happen!"
Sometimes described as "Better Off Dead Goes to the Beach", due to the same director and several returning cast members (Cusack, Armstrong, Negron, Waterbury) from the classic 1985 comedy. Additionally, the characters Hoops and Lane Meyer are both cartoonists.
Plot summary
John Cusack plays Hoops McCann, recent high school grad who failed to get a basketball scholarship, disappointing his parents. Hoops hopes to be admitted to the Rhode Island School of Design, and must write and illustrate a love story for his application. He joins his friend George Calamari (Joel Murray), and George's sister Squid, to spend the summer on the island of Nantucket, Massachusetts. En route, they pick up a young rock singer named Cassandra Eldridge (Demi Moore); she is being chased by a motorcycle gang at the time. Once on the island, Hoops and George, along with George's island friends the Stork twins and Ack-Ack Raymond (son of a Marine), must help Cassandra save her grandfather's house from the greedy Beckersted Family. Along the way, Hoops must find a way to write his cartoon love story.
Production notes
Several scenes were filmed in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. The Generic High School (Hyannis West High) and Generic Elementary (Hyannis West Middle school) Hyannis West Middle.
Hoops McCann is named after a basketball player from Steely Dan's song "Glamor Profession" from the Gaucho album.
Savage Steve Holland was reportedly upset with Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert's criticism of his earlier film Better Off Dead, which led to the gag with the two bunnies that get blown up at the end of the movie who bear a strong (and not accidental) resemblance to the movie critics.
