Advertising:
1. Stand-alone television program, such as a documentary or variety special, in contrast to a continuing series or a program shown in a limited number of parts over time. One-shots are usually heavily promoted before being aired and can give the advertiser greater exposure than a continuing program. Also, the content of the advertisement can be specially targeted to the context of the program.
2. Television or motion picture shot of one subject, such as an announcer speaking directly to the camera with nothing in the background.
Direct marketing: sale completed in one step, such as the sale of a book, versus a sale that involves a series of steps over time, such as the sale of a subscription, that includes renewal of the subscription and delivery of each issue.
One-shots are sometimes used to test a new publication. For example, a single issue of a new magazine may be published and offered on newsstands. If sales are good, additional issues will be published annually, quarterly, or on a bimonthly basis as determined by the product development budget and the availability of advertising and editorial content.
