Much like Frames Per Second, Only Love Can Break Your Heart tends to borrow a bit more from Tortoise's self-titled debut than one might wish. Fortunately, Only Love comes across as the more original of the two, if only because it contains a healthy Slint influence. Whether derivative or not, the results are appealing listening -- the record's shifting dynamics, rhythmic changes, ringing melodies, and solid composition are all lovely enough to keep listeners from caring about the (arguable) pointlessness of the band's sound. ~ Nitsuh Abebe, All Music Guide
