Review

Open Loose, a set that lives up to its name, features a very democratic trio comprised of bassist Mark Helias, tenor-saxophonist Tony Malaby and drummer Tom Rainey. Actually Rainey mostly plays quietly but pushes the group in spots. Helias has nearly as much solo space as Malaby; both are in top form. The music, which uses the no-changes approach of Ornette Coleman and also hints at Eric Dolphy in spots while overall being pretty original, is consistently intriguing and unpredictable. While the opening "Subway" has its violent moments, the music moves through quite a few emotions and has its peaceful sections. Tenor-saxophonist Ellery Eskelin guests on the ballad "Modern Scag." Well-worth exploring. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
