The Open Source Applications Foundation (OSAF) relies on the voluntary efforts of many friends to build a personal information manager (PIM) code-named Chandler, which brings together e-mail, an appointment calendar, and a contact list. The foundation provides an open-source alternative to Microsoft's Outlook program and Lotus Notes. It offers the product free of charge to home and work users in a variety of industries. Mitch Kapor, the entrepreneur behind Lotus Development (the company that popularized the PC spreadsheet), founded the organization in 2001.

OSAF Mission

The mission of the OSAF is stated this way:

  1. Create and gain wide adoption of open source application software of uncompromising quality.
  2. Carry forward the vision of Vannevar Bush, Doug Engelbart, and Ted Nelson of the computer as a medium for communication, collaboration, and coordination.
  3. Design a new application to manage personal information including notes, mail, tasks, appointments and events, contacts, documents and other personal resources.
  4. Enable sharing with colleagues, friends and family. In particular, meet the unique and under-served needs of small group collaboration.
  5. Demonstrate that open source software *can* serve a general audience in the consumer market.
  6. Offer a choice of platforms and full interoperability amongst Windows, Macintosh, and Linux versions.
  7. Leverage our resources by using an open source model of development.

Chandler Project

Chandler Project is a note-to-self organiser designed for personal and small-group task management and calendaring. Chandler Desktop and Chandler Hub (an instance of Chandler Server (Cosmo)) are complementary.

Chandler Desktop is written in Python and runs on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

Cosmo architecture diagrams present a Java web application executing within a J2EE servlet container or application server, providing Morse Code, CalDAV, Webcal and Atom services to a variety of clients.

In January 2008 Mitch Kapor ended his involvement with the Foundation, stepped down from the Board, and provided transitional funding. In the restructure that followed, Katie Capps Parlante became acting President. There are currently eleven employees with Sheila Mooney as President.

Since 2005, OSAF has participated in Google's Summer of Code programs by allowing several interns to work on OSAF projects during the summer.
