Open Source

Wikipedia: Open Source (radio show)

Open Source is a podcast and blog hosted by Christopher Lydon. Previously the show used to air on WGBH at 7:00pm, an hour before "Eric in the Evening," a well known Bostonian Jazz show, before Open Source lost funding from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. Open Source, the show, was produced by Mary McGrath, with the help of various others such as Brendan Greely, Robin Amer and David Miller. Currently, it is a production of Open Source Media, Inc. and presented in partnership with the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University. Open Source began its life as "the blog with a radio show" that was produced by the University of Massachusetts at Lowell in the studios of WGBH (Boston, Massachusetts) and was distributed to U.S. public radio stations by Public Radio International. From 1994 to 2001, Lydon had hosted another public radio program, The Connection, which was produced at WBUR in Boston.

The title, Open Source, refers to the show's use of practices used in the open source software movement and is a nod to the influence of the free software community based at the various universities in the Boston area. When it was a broadcast radio program, listeners could choose to participate in the show not by calling in (which was difficult for listeners outside of the WGBH area because the show was generally broadcast on tape delay in other cities) but by responding to blog posts at their web site.

The broadcast of the show was put on summer hiatus on June 28, 2007 due to a lack of funds[1] and then revived in November 2007 in a podcast-only format[2].

Open Source story topics are solicited from listeners and comments about guests and angles to explore are often discussed openly on the blog well before the show airs. Discussion after the show is aired also occurs on the web site, with suggestions made for future shows on the topic. The show is available under a Creative Commons NC-SA licence.
