opening day of The Supreme Court
Since 1917 the first Monday in October has been the official opening day of the annual term of the Supreme Court. The chief justice ceremoniously opens the session at 10:00 A.M. New justices, if any, take their oath of office, and attorneys are admitted to the bar of the Supreme Court. The Court shows its respect to retired and deceased colleagues and Supreme Court officers through brief statements of tribute. Since 1975 the opening day has also included oral arguments.
