(1961-62) a campaign authorized on November 3, 1961, by President John F. Kennedy to undermine Fidel Castro's Cuba. Led by Edward Lansdale, the operation included plans to assassinate Castro and to foment an overthrow of the Communist government. Emerging from a reassessment of Cuba policy after the Bay of Pigs, the plans of Operation Mongoose were ultimately superseded by the Cuban Missile Crisis.
