a polypeptide, present in the intermediate lobe of the pituitary gland, that includes within it the entire sequences of the peptide hormones corticotropin, α and β melanocyte stimulating hormone, β and γ lipotropin, and β endorphin. It is formed from proopiomelanocortin.
