Alterations to planes or surfaces to correct possible perceptions of distortion. They include entasis, increasing the height of stone courses with the height of a wall so that the courses appear identical in height, and the slight convex surface of a stylobate. The work of Penrose made a great contribution to the understanding of optical corrections.
