Music Encyclopedia: Ordinary chants

Chants from the Mass and Office whose texts remain constant from day to day in the services of the Western church, as distinct from those whose texts vary (Proper chants). It chiefly refers to the Mass chants Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Agnus dei, which were usually set polyphonically from the 14th century onwards.
