The Oregon Employment Department is employed by the state's workforce. At about 50 statewide offices, the department provides such services as continuing education, job-search workshops, and referrals. The department also offers several services for employers, including applicant screening and interviewing space. Of the more than 1.9 million workers in Oregon's labor force, about 5% are unemployed. They receive an average benefit of about $275 a week for an average of 14 weeks. The department lists more than 85,000 openings in its job bank. About 40,000 workers a year are hired as a direct result of Oregon Employment Department referrals.
