Orplid, the name of a fantastic island created in imagination by E. Mörike and his friend L. A. Bauer when they were boys at school at Urach. Its topography and history (which the two boys gradually elaborated) are outlined by the actor Larkens in the first part of Mörike's novel Maler Nolten. It was conceived to be in the Pacific between New Zealand and South America and its principal city also bore the name Orplid.
The island was protected by the goddess Weyla. In addition to heroic human inhabitants there was a population of elves, cobolds, and fairies. In time the island became too civilized and incurred the wrath of the gods; its people (except for one survivor) died out, and its buildings, except for the town and castle Orplid, fell into ruins. The dramatic fantasy (Ein phantasmagorisches Zwischenspiel) entitled Der letzte König von Orplid, which is included in Maler Nolten, portrays the landing on the island, centuries later, of the survivors of a shipwreck and the death of the last king of ancient Orplid, himself centuries old.
