An inflammation of the bone; an inflammation of the haversian spaces, canals, and their branches but generally not of the medullary cavity. The disease is characterized by tenderness and a dull, aching pain. Enlargement of the bone may occur. Osteitis of the alveolar process after tooth extraction is commonly referred to as dry socket.

Inflammation of bone. The term is used to describe a number of conditions; for instance, advanced cases of brucellosis can lead to brucellar osteitis. See also osteomyelitis.

  • alveolar o. — necrosis of alveolar bone at the site of a tooth extraction. Called also dry socket.
  • o. deformans — osteitis causing deformity of bones.
  • o. fibrosa — see osteodystrophia fibrosa.
  • o. fibrosa cystica — rarefying osteitis with fibrous degeneration and the formation of cysts and the presence of fibrous nodules on the affected bones, due to osteoclastic activity secondary to hyperparathyroidism. See also osteodystrophia fibrosa.
  • rarefying o. — a bone disease in which the inorganic matter is diminished and the hard bone becomes cancellated.
  • sclerosing o. — 1. sclerosing nonsuppurative osteomyelitis.
  • — 2. condensing osteitis.
