  • hypertrophic o. — a disease of unknown etiology that occurs in young, rapidly growing dogs primarily of the large or giant breeds, in which there is pain and soft tissue swelling usually around the distal radius, ulna and tibia, lameness, and varying degrees of fever, lethargy and anorexia. Periosteal new bone is formed around the metaphyses and sometimes diaphyses, contributing to the enlargement of the limbs. The cause is unknown but hypovitaminosis C has at various times been suggested.
