Boelcke, Oswald (1891-1916) World War I aviator, born in Giebichenstein near Halle, Germany. Boelcke was noted as the developer of seven rules of aerial combat; including, surprise the enemy; maintain offensive advantage; use formation flying; and avoid flying in “lone eagle” patrols. He died in a midair collision with another German pilot after forty successful dogfights.
