'Food for a Journey'. The literal translation comes from the Maori
o 'place' and
torohanga 'to extend over a distance'. This is a reference to a chief who, on his travels, ran short of food; he resorted to incantations so that his food supply would last the journey. Although the town was referred to as Harrodsville by some businessmen for a short period in 1986 as a publicity stunt, the name was never formally adopted. The practice was stopped following complaints by lawyers acting on behalf of Harrods, the emporium in Knightsbridge, London.
