Review

Vargas is one of the new names of bachata, a guitar-based music at times sentimental and at times raunchy, that only recently made its way out of the back-country and the slums into the limelight. With its non-merengue roots, it's more of a revolution than a mere new sound, and it has little to do with Juan-Luis Guerra's hit, "Bachata Rosa." Vargas is the delightful real thing with an instrumental style oddly reminiscent of early Congolese guitar (for good though indirect and complicated reasons), a flexible but plain-man voice and typical bachata lyrics alternating romance and double-entendre. ~ John Storm Roberts, Original Music, Rovi
