A term used to refer to the citizens of the Ottoman Empire after 1839, when the Tanzimat edict starting a period of reforms was declared (see Ottomanism). The term was started to be used more commonly especially after the empire officially became a constitutional monarchy in 1876. It was used for all the people living in the empire no matter what their religious or ethnic group was. The term was abolished when the Republic of Turkey was declared in 1923.
