Album Review: Out of Our Heads

Review

In 1965, the Stones finally proved themselves capable of writing classic rock singles that mined their R&B/blues roots, but updated them into a more guitar-based, thoroughly contemporary context. The first enduring Jagger-Richards classics are here -- "The Last Time," its menacing, folky B-side "Play With Fire," and the riff-driven "Satisfaction," which made them superstars in the States and defined their sound and rebellious attitude better than any other single song. On the rest of the album, they largely opted for mid-'60s soul covers, Marvin Gaye's "Hitch Hike," Otis Redding's "Cry to Me," and Sam Cooke's "Good Times" being particular standouts. "I'm All Right" (based on a Bo Diddley sound) showed their 1965 sound at its rawest, and there are a couple of fun, though derivative, bluesy originals in "The Spider and the Fly" and "The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man." ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

Recording and releases

Initially issued in July 1965 in America (featuring an alternate shot from the same photo session that graced the cover of 12 X 5 and The Rolling Stones No. 2), Out of Our Heads was a mish-mash of studio recordings over a six month period. It including the Top 10 hit "The Last Time", the worldwide number 1 smash "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", as well as a sampling from the UK-only live EP Got LIVE if you want it!. Riding the wave of "Satisfaction"'s success, Out of Our Heads became The Rolling Stones' first US #1 album, eventually going platinum. In 2003, this US edition was listed as number 114 on the List of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

With the benefit of new songs being recorded that September, the British Out of Our Heads—with a different album cover—dropped the live track and recent hit singles (as singles rarely featured on albums in the UK in those times), and added exclusive songs that would surface later in the US on December's Children (And Everybody's), in addition to songs that hadn't been released in the UK thus far (such as Heart Of Stone). Issued later that September, Out of Our Heads reached #2 in the UK charts behind The Beatles' Help!. It would also be The Rolling Stones' last UK album to predominantly feature R&B covers, with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards becoming far more prolific writers before 1965 was out.

In August 2002 both the US and UK editions of Out of Our Heads were reissued in a new remastered CD and SACD digipak by ABKCO Records.
