Officially, this is a Fascinations compilation, but the producers have also seen fit to include as a bonus every finished track by the Mayfield Singers and the Mayfield Players, 10 in all, of which only two were ever released in the group's own time. "I've Been Trying" is still one of the sweetest songs ever associated with Mayfield as songwriter or producer, with "If" close behind (and lots of fun with its copped Elmer Bernstein-Magnificent Seven riff). The Mayfield Players' tracks were unfinished, intended for vocals to be put on them, but they're still more hearing and hold up on their own-this would've made one hell of an instrumental album at the time, and it still does. "Little Bird," in particular, is as fine an unfinished piece of music as you'll ever want to hear, and the decision to end the CD with the unmixed backing track to the Fascinations' "Girls Are Out To Get You," which opens the disc in its finished form, is a stroke of genius (the backing track would've made a great single). ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
