Game Description

Outburst is a party game designed for a group of players divided into two teams.. The basic premise of Outburst is to have players call out answers (entered by a designated team captain) based on topics randomly supplied by the program. Each topic contains ten pre-determined Target Answers, which earn the team a single point when matched, and games consist of seven rounds with six variations. To speed up gameplay, only the first three letters of each answer need to be typed, as the program is designed to recognize correct responses.

Rounds 1, 2, and 4 feature "Regular Outburst," which gives teams 60 seconds to come up with answers and earn bonus points. In Round 3, "Reverse Burst" has players guessing the topic instead of the answers. Round 5 has two options: "Sloppy Seconds" and "Challenge Clock." In the former, teams have 30 seconds to make five correct matches, and the opposing team has 30 seconds to "steal" any answers not correctly matched for double points. The latter, a timed, winner-take-all event, has one team trying to match five pre-determined answers within one minute and the other team getting an equal amount of time on a different topic.

Round 6's "Shout Burst" features multiple-choice questions, while "Mondo Burst" in Round 7 offers a multitude of different Target Answers per topic. Single-player and network games (playable with up to eight players via LAN or Internet) have variations on the standard "party" game rules, but gameplay remains basically the same. Outburst is hosted by actor Timothy Stack and co-hosted by Lani Minella.

Outburst (subtitled The Game of Verbal Explosions!) is a game originally devised in 1986 by Hersch and Company of Los Angeles and later licensed by Parker Brothers, now a division of Hasbro.

The game is played with two teams, using cards on each side of which a topic heading is printed, followed by a list of 10 items that fall under the given topic. The object is to guess the items that were chosen for inclusion on the card, given the topic.

One of the two teams, with all of its players free to speak at the same time, attempts to guess as many of the 10 listed items as it can before the timer runs out. The team receives as many points as successful guesses, plus a bonus determined by a roll of dice. The first team to get 60 points wins.

A special viewer is used that prevents the card from being read (other than the topic heading) until it is placed in the viewer. This invisibility enables a team to pass. As many as 3 times during the game, a team has the option before playing of passing on the first topic offered. If the team chooses to pass, it must then accept the next topic drawn, while the other team will have to play the passed-on topic on its next turn.

While many of the topics are timeless, players should be advised beforehand of the year of publication of the edition being played.
