competitive goal orientation

The orientation of an athlete who tends to compare his or her performances with those of other athletes, and whose aim is to be better than them or to defeat them. Outcome goal orientation can have positive psychological effects when the athlete is winning (e.g. increasing perceived competence), but has negative effects when losing (e.g. lowering perceived competence and reducing effort during competitions).
