(out'plās'mənt) pronunciation
n.
The process of facilitating a terminated employee's search for a new job by provision of professional services, such as counseling, paid for by the former employer.

Job placement assistance and programs administered by organizations implementing downsizing or other staff reductions.
Although actual outplacement activities vary from one organization to another, depending on their needs and capabilities, essential activities usually include résumé preparation instruction, career and personal counseling, and office space with secretarial assistance and use of telephone and fax. Some organizations sponsor job fairs and advertise their available employees. The purpose of outplacement activities is to assist separated employees in coping with the pressures of termination while helping them to seek new employers.

Assistance provided through a third-party company and paid for by a former employer to help a laid-off employee find new employment. Outplacement assistance may include career counseling and analysis, professional resume writing, cover-letter writing, interview practice, salary-negotiation advice and resume distribution to employment agencies and head hunters.

Investopedia Says:
Outplacement services were traditionally provided at an outplacement firm so that the former employee could have access to office tools (such as a phone and computer) that he or she needed in order to write resumes and cover letters and find new employment. Today, many employees have home offices and may only need to visit an outplacement firm for career counseling, if at all, since counseling may also be done over the phone.
