overlapping gene
any gene whose polynucleotide sequence overlaps, wholly or in part, that of another gene in the same stretch of a genome. The codons may or may not be in the same reading frame. In mitochondria and some viruses, some mRNAs are synthesized by the transcription of the same DNA using different reading frames.
