overset matter

Marketing Dictionary: overset matter

Excess typeset copy; also called leftover matter; overmatter. Overset matter is not part of the planned layout and is used on a contingency basis should space be left open at the last minute. For example, if an advertiser decides to pull an advertisement out of a magazine at the last minute, overset matter, such as a short article, can be used to fill the space that had been allocated to the advertisement.
