Outside Paris: Versailles: Overview

Versailles is one of the most popular day-trips outside Paris, and indeed many visitors feel that it’s a must-see, right up there with the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower. And, much as with these monuments, a visit to Versailles can be much more enjoyable with a bit of advance planning. It’s not just a question of hopping on the RER and getting in line at the château entrance. There are many ways of getting here, and many different ticket combinations for entrance to the park, the gardens, the private guided tours, the audio tours, the stables and the shows. And that’s just the château! The town itself has a variety of sights and shops worth visiting as well. It’s certainly worth spending one or two nights in the town to really get to know the château, absorb the fascinating history, stroll the gardens and explore the open market and charming antiques shops.
