History

The area was constructed in the beginning of the 19th century, designed by John Nash.

Diagonal Crossing

In 2009, Westminster City Council commenced a £4m pedestrianisation scheme for the area, allowing shoppers to cross the intersection diagonally, turning it into a "pedestrian scramble", much like Tokyo's Shibuya crossing.[1] Work started in Summer 2009, and the crossing opened on November 2nd of the same year.[2]
