Oxted railway station is a busy interchange station and terminus located in Surrey, in the South East region of England. At present, all Train services are provided by Southern. The station is the busiest suburban station on the Oxted Line and is a terminus for the Uckfield branch of the Oxted Line. Other less frequent services are also provided to London Bridge via East Croydon Station and to Uckfield in Sussex via Hurst Green Station.

History

Oxted was built as a joint London, Brighton and South Coast Railway/South Eastern Railway station when the South Croydon to East Grinstead line opened on 10 March 1884. The Three Platforms are connected by a Subway which runs under the track. In addition, a lift is provided for entry to Platforms 2/3. There are tunnels at each end of the station:

  • Oxted Tunnel 1 mile 23 chains (2.07 km)[1] at the London end
  • Limpsfield Tunnel 551 yard (501 m) at the country end

Facilities

On the London-bound platform is a manned ticket office (staffed daily till late) and a standard quick-pay self-service passenger-operated ticket machine in Southern branding is located outside the station on the London-bound side and on Platforms 2 and 3 (Uckfield/East Grinstead bound).

A self-service PERTIS (PERMIT TO TRAVEL) passenger-operated coin-in-the-slot ticket machine is also available outside the station on the London-bound side for use when the ticket office is closed. The Station is and has remained as the biggest served solely by Southern on the line and staffed 24 hours a day. The Station accommodates a cafe, refurbished toilets, two waiting rooms and a line control center in a large concourse.

Line Terminus

The station can and does act as a terminus for the Uckfield Branch of the Oxted Line and trains use the siding on platform three on a regular basis after termination for both train maintenance and cleaning. The station also houses the line signal control box which was erected in 2000 replacing the previous ancient operative wooden structure which was involved in the Cowden Rail Collision of October 1994.

The Station was also the first station and terminus on the Southern Network to receive 2 fully DDA compliant ticket windows which just at the press of a button, will move down to accommodate easy use by wheelchair users. The Station is also linked to the Southern Control Center in Croydon, by three help points (one on each platform) where Passengers can receive help 24 hours a day externally.

Services

The typical off-peak service in trains per hour is:

  • Platform 1 is used for services to London Victoria from East Grinstead. Services are operated by Southern and two trains per hour typically depart to London Victoria.
  • Platform 1 is also used for services to London Bridge also operated by Southern. One train typically departs per hour to Uckfield. During off-peak hours and typical peak services, Oxted is used as the terminus and maintenance stop for these services.
  • Platform 2 is used for Southern services to East Grinstead from London Victoria. Two trains typically depart from the station per hour.
  • Platform 3 is used for departing and the occasional starting services to Uckfield. One train departs per hour to Uckfield during the off-peak schedule. Services are now operated solely only by Southern.

Off-Peak Uckfield Trains Terminate at Oxted

Oxted Line Trains divide into two separate branches at Hurst Green. Trains either divert to East Grinstead or to the much smaller Uckfield Branch. The line runs solely, on one track compared to the East Grinstead branch which runs on both double length tracking and electric track. Electrification and extension to Lewes is constantly being looked into and the plans may be introduced and run through in the future.

During the off-peak hours and during the Sunday services Uckfield Trains terminate at Oxted instead of going into London. The Southern staff work from Oxted on a full time basis cleaning and controlling the terminating trains.

Since Southern took over the responsibility of solely operating the station, Uckfield services have increased and Uckfield trains running during weekday peak no longer terminate at Oxted but run onto London Bridge. Southern have also agreed as part of their franchisee agreement to extend Uckfield services to late nights. Trains operated from Oxted are all located in the Selsdon Rail Depot.

Bus Services

Local Bus Services are provided by Southdown PSV and Metrobus on the behalf of Surrey County Council. The nearest Bus Stops are adjacent to the London Bound Platforms and near to the Subway on Station Road East. Rail Replacement Services stop directly outside the Main Concourse.

Destinations include: Westerham, Redhill, East Grinstead and Caterham.
