The addition of a molecule of oxygen to another molecule. The term is used in particular to describe the process, whereby haemoglobin becomes loaded with oxygen to become oxyhaemoglobin. Molecules of oxygen are carried by the haem groups, but the iron in haem remains in the ferrous state and does not become oxidized.
