(abbr.: LXR) either of two orphan receptors, LXRα and LXRβ, whose endogenous ligands are oxysterols. Both occur in the enterohepatic system, with LXRα also present in adipose tissues and LXRβ being more widely distributed. Both form obligate heterodimers with retinoid X receptor (which binds 9-cis-retinoic acid), and the dimer binds to specific hormone response elements on DNA.
