He worked on murals in various Qu?bec churches as an assistant to Adolphe Rho (1839-1905) and Luigi Cappello (1843-1903). His first easel paintings were still-lifes made up of everyday objects taken from his surroundings (e.g. Three Apples, 1887; Montreal, Mus. F.A.) and portraits of family and friends that already show the intimate and calm quality that characterizes all his work. In 1897 he went for seven months to study in Paris, where he familiarized himself with the work of French muralists. In murals for 31 churches and chapels in Qu?bec, Nova Scotia and New England, Leduc sought to reconcile a narrative and didactic treatment of religious iconography with a Symbolist interpretation of light and colour.
