A mathematical function analogous to the calculation of pH. It is the negative log (p) of the constant of acid dissociation (Ka). When the pKa of a buffering agent equals the pH of the solution to be buffered, the buffering system is most effective. According to the Henderson Hasselbach equation, pKa = pH + log ([HOAc]/[OAc-]).
