p53

(genetics) A multifunctional tumor suppressor protein consisting of several domains that exhibit a number of biochemical activities and interact with a large variety of cellular and viral proteins; its encoding gene is the most commonly mutated gene in tumor cells.

A gene that is thought to play a role in regulating cell death or apoptosis, in suppressing tumors, in regulating the cell cycle, and in stopping the cell from dividing when the DNA is damaged.

A tumor suppressor gene active in the cellular response to DNA damage and cell cycle arrest.
