Veterinary Dictionary:

pail-feeding

A method of rearing calves by weaning them off the dam and feeding them on her or another cow's milk or milk replacer in a bucket without the use of a nipple. Because of the common practice of feeding at too long intervals with cold milk there is a higher prevalence of dietary diarrhea in pail-fed calves than in calves that are suckled. See also dietary diarrhea.
