The Palestine Monetary Authority (PMA) (Arabic: سلطة النقد الفلسطينية) [1] is the central bank of Palestine.[2] It is located in Ramallah. The current governor is Dr Jihad Al Wazir.
The PMA was established by presidential decree in 1994 following the Oslo Agreement between the Palestine Liberation Organization and the State of Israel. Later it was established as an independent institution by an act of the Palestine Legislative Council under Law No. 2 of 1997 with full autonomy in the pursuit of its objective of monetary and financial stability.[3]
It is active in promoting financial inclusion policy and a member of the Alliance for Financial Inclusion. [4] It is responsible for setting monetary policy as well as overseeing the activity of regular banks (or "high street banks").
The acting Prime Minister of the PNA, Salam Fayyad, has stated that he intends for Palestine to have its own currency possibly before a full declaration of statehood.[5]
