The Palijo (Urdu: پلیجو) are Sindhi tribe of Sindh province, Pakistan. Palijo is a Sammat tribe. During the Talpur dynasty and before, this tribe held lands on the banks of the Indus River when that area was under official administration of the Palijo tribe and was called Palijar'pargana, ranging from Choriya Jagir, now in Tando Muhammad Khan District, to Pinyari Phat, in Thatta District.

Distribution

Most of this tribe live mainly in the Bannu, Daro, Jungshahi and Mirpur Sakro areas of Thatta District. However some families are settled in Nasarpur in Matiari District, Sunn in Jamshoro District, Bangaldero in Larkana District, Hingorja in Khairpur District, Norai in Tando Muhammad Khan District and in the cities of Hyderabad and Karachi.

The Total population of Palijo tribe is around 15,000. The head (Sardar) of this tribe is called Arbab and current head of Palijo tribe is Arbab Abdul Hai Palijo son of late Arbab Noor Muhammad Palijo.

Well known personalities from the Palijo Tribe include Rasool Bux Palijo, senior politician, intellectual, scholar and lawyer; Hamzo Khan Palijo Ex Senator, Ex Chairman District Council Thatta, Ghulam Qadir Palijo Businessman,twice elected MPA from Mirpur Sakro District Thatta Sindh; Ayaz Latif Palijo President Sindh Awami Tahreek, Human Rights Lawyer, Teacher and Scholar; Sassui Palijo, Only Female Elected MPA in Sindh from Mirpur Sakro District Thatta Sindh, Minister for Culture, Government of Sindh; Sarmad Palijo youngest Electronic Media owner in Pakistan, founder and CEO [1] of Josh FM 99 radio stations, Karachi, Lahore & Hyderabad; currently a Mason Fellow at J.F Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University; USAInayatullah Palijo, ex-councilor District Council Thatta; Shaheed Mehtab Ali Palijo, first Sindhi Martyred in Kargil War, soldier of Pakistan Army-36-Baloch Regiment.

History

In the year 1603 Palijo Sardar welcomed the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan when he visited Thatta and helped build the Shah Jahan Mosque, Thatta.
