pancration, an event in Greek athletic festivals. It was a specialized form of all-in wrestling in which the aim was to get an opponent to admit defeat when he was in danger of strangulation or a broken limb. The only tactics we know to have been forbidden were biting and gouging out an opponent's eye. Success in this event was highly esteemed.
